The château takes its name from a Germanic tribe, the Poppo, who settled here on the rocky promontory at the time of Charlemagne. The site thus came to be known as Mons Poppo (the hill of the Poppos).With the passage of time this evolved into Montpoupon.

Once one of Francois 1st’s hunting lodges it was transformed into an elegant manor by Jean du Thier in the 16th century. Visit the historic portrait gallery, and take a walk around the 70-hectare English-style landscaped park.

Nestled in a wooded valley, the architecture of the Gué-Péan has 2,000 years of history to tell: built on the square base of a Roman camp, then a Middle-Age fortress of which the stone bridge and dry moat still exist. The Gué-Péan belongs to a futuristic architect and a glimpse of models of his projects around the world can be caught in the Models room.
